By Zoila Palma: Today, Belize observes National Service Day, marking the 14th anniversary of the passing of the Father of the Nation, the Right Honorable George Cadle Price.
Each year, members of the People’s United Party (PUP) and other dignitaries gather at his grave to honor his enduring contributions and legendary service to the country. The day stands as a reminder of Price’s lifelong dedication to the development and independence of Belize.
Born on January 15, 1919, Price’s journey began with aspirations of becoming a Jesuit priest before returning home to serve his people.
In 1947, he won his first election to the Belize City Town Board, and by 1950, he co-founded the PUP, which he would lead for four decades.
His vision and leadership guided Belize through its most pivotal years, from the fight for adult suffrage and self-government to achieving full independence on September 21, 1981, when he became the nation’s first prime minister.
Price’s legacy as a statesman is etched in Belizean history.
He was the first recipient of the Order of National Hero and was honored internationally with awards such as the Jose Marti Award from Cuba.
Belizeans remember him not only for his political achievements but also for his humility and personal touch—driving through villages in his jeep, greeting citizens from all walks of life.
Fourteen years after his passing on September 19, 2011, his example of service and nation-building continues to inspire generations of Belizeans.
