By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) on Thursday joined forces with the Projects Unit of the Belize Marketing & Development Corporation in conducting field visits to onion farms in the Corozal District. According to MAFSE, the move is part of the strategy to shift from importing onions to start marketing the locally produced onions as the local season gets underway.
The MAFSE said they are working together with the BMDC to support Belizean farmers.
“We wish our farmers a very productive 2024 onion season and look forward to quality onion supplies for our Belizean consumers,” MAFSE said.
One day before, on Wednesday, January 17, MAFSE held its second onion meeting for the 2023/2024 production year with onion farmers from the Corozal, Orange Walk, and Belize Districts.
MAFSE said 35 participants, including representatives from BAHA, Customs, BMDC, and Extension Officers, participated actively in the discussions in which MAFSE stressed the need to produce good quality onions that meet the market needs.
“The primary objective of the meeting was to share forecasts and estimates of onion production for the upcoming season,” MAFSE said.
“This collaborative effort aimed to provide valuable insights into the expected yield, fostering a better understanding of market dynamics and demand projections.”
MAFSE said the meeting was an opportunity for dialogue and planning, preparing for a successful onion season.
