By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize suffered their fourth consecutive defeat in the XV Under 19 Men’s Central American Volleyball Championship, falling to Guatemala 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-13) on Thursday at the FESAVOL Gymnasium in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Belize continue struggling and fell to a 0-4 record in the competition, just ahead of Honduras, who are also 0-4. On the other hand, the victory improved Guatemala’s record to three wins and one loss, giving them a great chance to make the podium.
Guatemala were more effective, earning 41 attack points to Belize’s 32. They also gained 29 points from Belize’s unforced errors while conceding 12. Belize edged Guatemala 5-3 in blocks. The teams were tied 2-2 in aces.
Lebron Baizar and Daniel Musa were Belize’s top scorers, each contributing 8 points. Omar Mendoza scored 16 points for Guatemala.
“We didn’t finish our plays. We worked well on reception and defense, but we lacked definition in our attacks,” Herrera told the Central American Association of Volleyball Federations (AFECAVOL).
“We couldn’t convert many of our defensive plays into points. We have two very important games remaining, and we must try to win at least one to avoid finishing poorly.”
“Every victory is important. The good thing is we earned five points with this win, and we hope to continue adding points throughout the rest of the tournament,” Guatemala’s coach Luis Castañeda said.
“Our service was crucial against Belize, and the team served very well, which greatly helped our blocking to neutralize the opponent.”
Belize will need to regroup and aim for victories in their upcoming matches against Costa Rica and Honduras to improve their standing in the tournament.
