Belize lose 3-1 to Nicaragua, finish 6th in 2024 Under 19 UNCAF FIFA Forward Tournament in Honduras

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize lost 3-1 to Nicaragua on Thursday and finished in sixth place in the 2024 Under 19 Central American Football Union (UNCAF) FIFA Forward Tournament at Olimpia High Performance Center (Centro de Alto Rendimiento – CAR CDO) in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Juban Uriarte opened the score in the 12^th minute to put Nicaragua up 1-0.

But Belize bounced back and tied the match with a superb goal by Felix Martínez in the 29^th minute.

Nicaragua went ahead in the 45^th minute on a goal by Francis Castillo and sealed their victory with Kenler Cayasso’s goal in the 76^th.

Nicaragua captured fifth place in the regional tournament.

Belize and Nicaragua played each other for fifth place after finishing third in their groups.

In the first round, Belize lost to eventual winners Guatemala 6-0 in Group B, fell to Costa Rica 7-1, but defeated invited guests Cuba 2-1.

Guatemala won the tournament with 3-0 penalty shootout over Panama after a 0-0 draw on Thursday. Honduras beat Costa Rica 3-2 to claim third place, while took seventh place winning over Cuba 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw.

Belize will be playing Cuba again nexth month in the Concacaf Under 20 Championship Qualifiers.

The UNCAF FIFA Forward U19 Men’s Tournament was a preparatory tournament for the Concacaf Under 20 Championship Qualifiers which will be played in February and March in different venues. The U20 BMNT is playing the qualifiers in Group A in Managua, Nicaragua from February 23 to March 3, 2024 against Cuba, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, and Nicaragua.
