By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) face a tough challenge tonight as they take on Costa Rica in the Concacaf Gold Cup Premiliminary Round return match in San Jose, Costa Rica Friday at 7:00 pm. Following a woeful 7-0 defeat in their previous encounter, Belize’s Head Coach Carlos Slusher has three significant changes to the starting lineup and switched to a 4-5-1 formation.
Slusher has brought in Brandon Anderson (22) as the starting goalkeeper, replacing Isaac Castillo. Other changes to the lineup see Javan Ramos and Angelo Capello out, with Jaylen Lennan (4) and Freybin Pagoada (16) stepping into the starting eleven.
The Belize starting lineup is as follows, reflecting a projected 4-5-1 formation:
- Goalkeeper: Brandon Anderson (22)
- Defense: Donell Arzu (23), Eugene Martinez (2) (Captain), Deshawon Nembhard (5), Norman Anderson (3)
- Midfield: Jalen Lennon (4), Freybin Pagoada (16), Darrel Myvett (14)
- Forward: Carlos Bernardez, Krisean Lopez (20)
The bench includes Angelo Capello (10), Daijon Daniels (15), Steven Gentle (19), Jaheim Mena (7), Eric Rodriguez (1), Eddie Williams (13), Isaac Castillo (12), Shamar Flowers (21), Marlon Meza Jr. (17), Jovaunn Ramos (6), Kendrick Wagner (8), and Shawn Young (9).
Belize faces an uphill battle, playing Costa Rica, who for all intense and purposes, already have their ticket to the next round. Belize is aiming to improve upon their performance in the previous game.
The Belize team is dealing with significant challenges, as they are missing several key players. Approximately nine players, including four regular starters and five others who have started games, are not with the team due to differences with the FFB regarding stipends and game fees.
Anything better than the 7-0 loss from last Friday will be viewed as a step in the right direction for the team.
