By Zoila Palma: Belize is leading regional efforts to address the growing sargassum crisis, hosting a high-level bilateral meeting with the Dominican Republic to discuss coordinated responses to the influx affecting countries across the region.
The meeting was convened by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, which currently holds the Pro Tempore Presidency of the Central American Commission for the Environment and Development (CCAD).
The session was led by Minister Orlando Habet and Ana Pimentel, Vice Minister of Climate Change and Sustainability at the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.
With sargassum arrivals increasingly affecting CCAD member states along the Atlantic coast, officials exchanged experiences on mitigation measures, immediate responses and the operational challenges being faced by affected countries.
A key focus of the discussions was the need to move beyond emergency responses toward coordinated and sustainable sargassum management.
Delegates considered an initiative to strengthen regional knowledge management and data sharing under the CCAD framework, while Belize also presented its proposed “SARGA-CLEAN” initiative, a sustainable sargassum management and circular economy concept aimed at transforming the environmental challenge into potential economic opportunities.
The outcomes of the bilateral meeting are expected to help shape regional policy and guide discussions at the CCAD Council of Ministers.
