By Zoila Palma: Belize officially opened Disability Week 2025 on Sunday, marking seven days of national awareness and advocacy under the global theme “Fostering Disability Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.”

The Ministry of Human Development, Family Support and Gender Affairs led the launch in Belmopan, highlighting the country’s ongoing commitment to advancing the rights, dignity, and full participation of persons with disabilities.

In her opening address, Minister of Human Development Thea Garcia-Ramirez underscored that disability inclusion is a matter of justice and nation-building—not charity. She emphasized that Belize’s strength is measured by its ability to uphold the rights and potential of every citizen.

As the country marks another year since the passage of the Belize Disability Act, Minister Garcia-Ramirez noted progress on several key initiatives, including the establishment of the Disability Secretariat, the appointment of the National Disability Commission, and the development of the Belize National Disability Strategy.

Throughout the week, the Ministry will spotlight advancements designed to make Belize more inclusive and accessible.

These include strengthened collaboration with NEMO and the Special Needs Disaster Risk Committee to ensure that disaster risk management systems account for the needs of persons with disabilities.

Disability Week 2025 will feature a series of public awareness campaigns, community activities, and recognition events celebrating advocates and organizations driving change.
