Belize joins regional push to connect Central America’s trade and borders

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize has taken a seat in the room where Central America’s future trade routes are being drawn. A delegation comprising Mrs. Narda Garcia, Chief Executive Officer in the Office of the Prime Minister, Investment and Civil Aviation, in her capacity as Alternate Governor to the Inter-American Development Bank, and Ms. Cinnamon Bottaro, Belize’s Representative on the IDB Board of Directors, participated in the Ministerial Dialogue “Central America at the Center: Connectivity and Integration for a more Competitive Region” in Panama City on August 12.

The gathering, part of the IDB’s América en el Centro initiative covering Central America, Panama and the Dominican Republic, brought together ministers of finance, transport and trade to work on practical solutions: improving regional roads and border crossings, modernizing customs and logistics, mobilizing investment and easing the movement of goods.

Discussions included Cargo Pass, an initiative to move cargo across borders safely, efficiently and with greater traceability, exactly the kind of system that will determine how quickly and cheaply Belizean exports reach regional markets.

Government says Belize’s participation ensures the country is part of the planning from the outset, because the infrastructure and trade systems designed today will shape regional commerce for decades. As the only nation holding membership in both SICA and CARICOM, Belize sees an opportunity not simply to connect with its neighbours, but to help connect Central America with Mexico and the Caribbean.
