By Zoila Palma: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise has raised the alarm over the resurgence of the New World Screwworm (NWS), a parasitic disease that had been eradicated in Central America and Mexico more than two decades ago.
Officials warn that the pest, Cochliomyia hominivorax, poses a significant threat to animals, people, and ecosystems, with direct impacts on food security, rural livelihoods, and community well-being.
To contain the spread, regional authorities have joined forces with the Government of the United States, through the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), along with international partners including IICA, OIRSA, FAO, and the Panama-United States Commission for the Eradication and Prevention of New World Screwworm (COPEG).
Measures already underway include the aerial and ground release of sterile flies at strategic points, particularly in southern Mexico and other vulnerable areas of Central America. Officials say these actions are critical to safeguarding human and animal health, protecting trade, and minimizing economic losses.
As part of the response, a specialized training course titled “New World Screwworm: Prevention and Control” is being offered to agricultural professionals, technicians, and community actors.
The Ministry noted that the course will provide both technical and practical knowledge to strengthen prevention strategies and ensure coordinated action across the region.
