By Zoila Palma: Belize is strengthening its engagement with Central America as countries across the region explore ways to improve connectivity, facilitate trade and create a more competitive regional economy. The discussions focused on practical measures to improve the movement of goods and people across borders.
A Belizean delegation participated in the Ministerial Dialogue, “Central America at the Center: Connectivity and Integration for a More Competitive Region,” held in Panama City on August 12, 2026.
The delegation included Narda Garcia, Chief Executive Officer in the Office of the Prime Minister, Investment and Civil Aviation, in her capacity as Alternate Governor to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and Cinnamon Bottaro, Belize’s Representative on the IDB Board of Directors.
The dialogue was held under the IDB’s América en el Centro regional initiative, which seeks to promote greater connectivity, competitiveness and economic integration among Central America, Panama and the Dominican Republic. Ministers and senior officials responsible for finance, transportation and trade discussed improving regional roads and border crossings, modernizing customs and logistics systems, mobilizing investment and facilitating the movement of goods.
Particular attention was given to Cargo Pass, an initiative aimed at developing a more integrated system for the safe, efficient and traceable movement of cargo across borders. For Belize, participation in the discussions provides an opportunity to ensure the country is included in regional planning as new infrastructure, trade routes and logistics systems are developed.
As a member of both SICA and CARICOM, Belize occupies a unique position between Central America and the Caribbean.
The Government said deeper integration with Central America could create opportunities for Belizean businesses, exporters and consumers, while also positioning the country to help strengthen connections between Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean.
Belize will continue working with regional partners and the IDB to ensure it contributes to and benefits from a more connected and integrated region.
