Observed annually on March 21st, the day highlights the importance of supporting individuals with Down syndrome, a condition caused by an extra chromosome 21.
While the exact cause is unknown, Down syndrome affects individuals worldwide, influencing learning styles, physical traits, and health.
Since 2012, the United Nations has encouraged countries to participate in raising awareness about Down syndrome, with an emphasis on ensuring access to health care, early intervention, inclusive education, and community support.
With an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 children born with Down syndrome annually, it’s crucial to improve support systems to help individuals thrive.
Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard urges all Belizeans to commit to inclusivity and support those with down syndrome.
“Today, on World Down Syndrome Day, we celebrate the incredible individuals who enrich our lives with their unique perspectives and boundless spirit. As the Minister of Health and Wellness, I want to emphasize our commitment to inclusivity and support for those with Down syndrome and their families.
Together, let’s raise awareness, promote acceptance, and advocate for the rights of people with Down syndrome. Every individual deserves the opportunity to thrive and contribute to our communities.
Join us in recognizing the value and potential of every person. Together, we can build a more inclusive society where everyone is celebrated for who they are,” Bernard said.
