Belize joins Global Alliance to protect and sustainably manage ocean

By Zoila Palma:  Belize has formally joined the 100% Alliance for Sustainable Ocean Management, committing to sustainably manage 100% of the ocean areas under its national jurisdiction by 2030 through the development and implementation of a Sustainable Ocean Plan.

The initiative builds on several existing national efforts, including the Belize Sustainable Ocean Plan, integrated coastal and ocean management, Blue Bonds commitments, marine spatial planning, sustainable fisheries management, climate and biodiversity initiatives, and investments in the blue economy. The 100% Alliance, supported by the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, brings together coastal and ocean states working toward integrated and sustainable ocean management.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will provide technical assistance to help Belize strengthen the policy, data, governance and financing systems needed to advance its Sustainable Ocean Plan and establish a broader National Oceans Programme. An agreement between the Government of Belize and the IDB was signed on August 20 during the Government’s Green and Blue Finance Forum in Punta Gorda.

Prime Minister John Briceño said the commitment will help bring Belize’s existing ocean-related initiatives under one national vision. “Belize’s decision to join the 100% Alliance is about ensuring that every part of our ocean is managed with purpose—for our people, our economy, and future generations,” Briceño said. He added that the initiative will be supported by science, clear planning and sustainable financing.

The National Oceans Programme is expected to coordinate priorities in marine spatial planning, fisheries, conservation, coastal resilience, tourism, blue investment, blue carbon, biodiversity and pollution management.
