By Horace Palacio: According to a recent article by Nicole Cord-Cruz published on Islands, Belize’s Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (PGIA) has earned a notorious reputation as one of the worst airports in Central America.
Travelers have long expressed frustration with the airport experience, highlighting issues such as cramped spaces, long queues, and unwelcoming environments. In 2015, PGIA landed fourth on Sleeping in Airports’ list of worst airports in the Caribbean and Central America due to these persistent complaints.
Online reviews also paint a bleak picture of the airport, with one Reddit user noting that customs agents were “yelling and screaming at everyone,” while others criticized the lack of amenities, limited food and drink options, and overall grimy conditions. Despite Belize being a tropical paradise attracting tourists from all over the world, its primary international airport leaves much to be desired.
However, there is some hope on the horizon. Belize is currently undergoing major rehabilitation and expansion projects at the airport, with a $30 million USD first phase already underway.
Future improvements, as announced by Prime Minister John Briceño, include larger customs areas, better dining and shopping options, and upgraded facilities like escalators and elevators. These renovations aim to modernize the airport and accommodate the growing number of tourists expected in the coming years.
While PGIA may currently be considered one of the worst, these upgrades promise a brighter future for travel in and out of Belize.
