By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize is importing more than ever.
Statistician Tiffany Vasquez reported this week that merchandise imports for the first eight months of 2026 totalled $2.207 billion.
That is an increase of 15.8 percent, or $301.5 million, over the same period last year, and the highest level on record.
At the same time, exports are falling. Belize’s total exports from January to August amounted to $272.8 million, down 14 percent or $44.6 million from $317 million last year.
Sugar and citrus products saw the most notable declines.
The result is a widening trade gap. For the first half of 2026, Belize’s merchandise trade deficit stood at about $1.2 billion.
