Belize immigration officer Saul Enrique Lisbey charged with assaulting woman at border

By Horace Palacio: Saul Enrique Lisbey, a 48-year-old senior immigration officer, was charged on Wednesday with wounding following an alleged assault of a woman at the Western Border crossing last Monday.

The incident occurred as Teresa Jones was re-entering Belize from Guatemala. According to reports, a verbal altercation ensued between Ms. Jones and Mr. Lisbey after Ms. Jones expressed frustration with the pace of the immigration line.

Mr. Lisbey reportedly exited his booth, approached Ms. Jones, and pushed her to the ground, causing her to lose consciousness. She was later taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

The Immigration Department immediately launched an investigation and placed Mr. Lisbey on administrative leave. He was arrested and formally charged on Wednesday.

This incident has raised serious concerns about the conduct of immigration officials and the safety of individuals crossing the border. The Immigration Department has assured the public that they are taking the matter seriously and will cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.

The case is currently under investigation, and Mr. Lisbey is expected to appear in court in the coming days.
