By Horace Palacio: Belize’s Gold Cup campaign came to a crushing end Tuesday night as the Men’s National Team (BMNT) was routed 6–1 by Costa Rica at the Estadio Nacional in San José. The defeat brought the aggregate score to 13–1, following a 7–0 loss in the first leg in Belize.
Costa Rica wasted no time asserting dominance, scoring four goals in the first half—including an own goal by Belize’s Donell Arzu in the opening minute. Carlos Bernárdez managed to get Belize on the scoreboard early in the second half, but the Ticos responded with two more goals to seal the blowout.
The result sparked renewed frustration among Belizean fans, with criticism once again aimed at the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) over its management of the team. Several experienced players sat out the qualifiers due to unresolved issues over stipends and match payments.
In the wake of the national disappointment, newly appointed Minister of Sports Anthony Mahler addressed the nation via social media, pledging a full reset of the sports system.
“Belize, we will restructure, reset and reimagine sports in Belize,” Mahler posted on Facebook. “I assure you that Minister Daly and I will work day and night to do better. All that we ask is that you be patient while we make the necessary changes.”
As the dust settles on a disappointing Gold Cup run, the focus now turns to whether Mahler and his ministry can deliver on their promise—and begin to rebuild public trust in Belizean football.
