By Zoila Palma: The Pesticides Control Board (PCB) of Belize joined regional counterparts on Friday, September 26, in observing Pesticides Awareness Day 2025 with an Open Day event in Central Farm, Cayo District.
The event formed part of the annual Pesticides Awareness Week, coordinated across the Caribbean by the Coordinating Group of Pesticides Control Boards of the Caribbean (CGPC), of which Belize has been a member since 2005.
The day’s program opened with remarks by PCB officials and the inauguration of the Board’s training and demonstration center, followed by a series of practical sessions under the National Pesticide Training and Certification Program.
Demonstrations focused on pesticide life cycle management, including nozzle selection, pesticide formulations, proper use of personal protective equipment, and safe disposal of empty containers. A garden display also showcased plants with natural pesticide properties.
The Open Day featured displays from a wide range of partners, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), Caribbean Agriculture and Research Institute (CARDI), the Department of the Environment, Ministry of Health and Wellness, and other organizations working in agriculture, health, biodiversity, and conservation. Activities highlighted efforts to promote safe pesticide use, sustainable farming, and environmental protection.
Students, farmers, vendors, and members of the public attended the event, which organizers described as both educational and enjoyable.
The PCB said it remains committed to raising awareness about pesticide safety while strengthening collaboration with national and regional partners to support food security, public health, and environmental conservation.
