By Zoila Palma: Belize is joining countries around the world in observing Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) Day on June 27, as the United Nations highlights this year’s theme, “Empowering MSMEs through Innovation and Sustainable Industrial Development.”
The observance recognizes the vital role MSMEs play in driving economic growth, creating jobs and supporting livelihoods.
Globally, MSMEs account for more than 90 percent of businesses, provide between 60 and 70 percent of employment, and contribute about 50 percent of the world’s Gross Domestic Product, making them a cornerstone of both local and national economies.
The United Nations says MSMEs are especially important for women, young people and vulnerable groups, but many continue to face significant challenges, including limited access to financing, inadequate infrastructure, and barriers to operating within the formal economy.
In Belize, the Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the sector through the launch of the Third National MSME Roadshow 2026, officially unveiled on June 24 in San Ignacio.
During the launch, Chief Executive Officer in the Office of the Prime Minister, Investment and Civil Aviation, Narda Garcia, said MSMEs remain critical to Belize’s economic growth, job creation and community development. She emphasized the Government’s focus on expanding access to financing, business support services, market opportunities and policies that create a more enabling environment for entrepreneurs.
Now in its third edition, the National MSME Roadshow has become one of Belize’s flagship business development initiatives, engaging more than 2,000 entrepreneurs since it began in 2022.
This year’s programme will make ten stops across all municipalities, including San Pedro and Caye Caulker, offering capacity-building workshops, town hall consultations, formalization clinics and Buy Belizean Expos. The initiative is designed to connect entrepreneurs with government services, financing opportunities and expert guidance while encouraging more businesses to enter the formal economy.
As the world observes MSME Day, the United Nations is urging governments and development partners to invest in technology, digital infrastructure, affordable financing and skills development to help small businesses thrive.
