Belize highlighted by World Meteorological Organization for success of Early Warning Systems

By Zoila Palma: Belize has been featured by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as a leading example of how investments in early warning systems can save lives, protect livelihoods, and deliver significant economic benefits.

The WMO highlighted two socio-economic benefit analyses that examined the work of the National Meteorological Service of Belize (NMSB) and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), showing the value of weather forecasting, warnings, and emergency coordination.

According to the WMO, “the value of early warnings lies in the strength of the whole system.” The organization noted that while accurate forecasts and official warnings are essential, their effectiveness depends on how well information is communicated, how agencies coordinate their response, and how quickly communities and authorities take action.

This is especially important for Belize, which remains vulnerable to hurricanes, floods, droughts, and other climate-related hazards.

The analysis found that “every Belize Dollar (BZD) invested in the service brings an estimated BZD 3.30 to BZD 6.80 in economic and social benefits” through the National Meteorological Service of Belize.

Meanwhile, a separate assessment of NEMO determined that every dollar invested in the agency generates an estimated BZD 6.42 in avoided economic losses by supporting preparedness, response planning, evacuations, and national coordination during emergencies.

The WMO said the findings provide strong evidence to support future investments in weather services, disaster risk reduction, and early warning systems.

The organization concluded that “Belize’s experience shows that investing in early warnings is not only an investment in forecasts and systems. It is an investment in safety, resilience, and sustainable development.”
