Belize hands over American fugitives wanted for rape and weapons charges

Posted: Saturday, April 12, 2025. 4:18 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: Belizean police, in coordination with the United States Embassy, have deported two American nationals who were wanted on serious charges, including weapons trafficking and rape. The fugitives were apprehended in Belize and sent back to the U.S. to face criminal prosecution.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams confirmed that these deportations were the result of strong collaboration between Belizean law enforcement and American authorities. He noted that once intelligence is received about the whereabouts of a fugitive, the police work closely with U.S. counterparts to conduct surveillance and carry out arrests.

“We have done that recently with a number of fugitives on the U.S. side,” Williams said. “Once we locate them, they’re taken back to the U.S. where they face whatever charges await.”

Asked about returnees in general, Williams added that although many deportees have been arriving in Belize since the start of the year, most are not persons of interest to local authorities and are processed through routine immigration procedures.
