By Aaron Humes: The Belizean government has taken significant steps to improve labour force participation and employability, particularly among women and youth. The Cabinet has approved a package of programs aimed at enhancing services that promote access to the labour force for the general population, with specialized support for women and young people.
The program will increase skills supply through relevant and quality-focused training in priority sectors, ensuring that training institutions like ITVET are better equipped to meet labour market demands.
The Cabinet has approved the submission of three new Labour Standards to the National Assembly, recently adopted at the International Labour Conference. These conventions address critical issues such as violence and harassment, protecting workers from violence and harassment in the workplace; safe and healthy working environments – ensuring safe and healthy working conditions for all workers; and biological hazards, mitigating the risks associated with biological hazards in the workplace.
Cabinet has, further, approved a comprehensive review of the Labour Act, to be conducted in phases, to ensure that the legislation is aligned with international standards and best practices. The Ministry responsible for Labour will work with the Attorney General’s Ministry to prepare draft legislative amendments to the Act.
The Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour, and Local Government, led by Minister Florencio Marin Jr., will play a crucial role in implementing these initiatives. The Minister with responsibility for Labour will submit the new Labour Standards to the National Assembly for legislative approval. The Ministry will also work closely with the Attorney General’s Ministry to prepare the necessary documentation for submission to the International Labour Organization (ILO).
