Belize Government Lotteries doing better than Brad’s at its height in lotteries sales

Chair of the Lotteries Commission Narda Garcia believes so. As she spoke with reporters on Monday, she drew comparison to reported gross sales at the height of the previous Brad’s Gaming Company regime. “I was looking at the numbers last night and I’m looking from 2019 when he reported gross sales of 19 million. Annual gross annual gross sales of 19 million. So this is almost four times that. Yes, and 2022 when he reported 45 million. But at that time remember that the government had changed. I was already chairing a new board, a new lotteries committee, and we were trying to do our work as best as possible to ensure more oversight.”

Brad’s Gaming Company had their licenses revoked last May for failure to adhere to certain terms and conditions and at last report faced tax reviews for their expired 2020 license and canceled 2023 license. They had sought to challenge the validity of the cancellation in court.

But how are Belizeans spending so much on boledo and why? Garcia ascribed it to tradition for a certain section of the population:

“The way you look at lotteries from an economic standpoint, right? Or gaming really is a reallocation of resources to a sector of the population. Right? This is what happens. You will never be able to stop gambling or gambling, playing lotteries. It will always be from all spheres of all sectors of society. But basically, the low-income earners are the biggest players. And why? For all the social reasons, that’s the situation.”
