By Breaking Belize News Staff: A proposal from the United States to designate Belize as a “Safe Third Country” for asylum seekers has stirred national debate over immigration and the country’s role in regional diplomacy.
The Briceño administration confirmed that Washington has put the idea forward and submitted draft documents, which are now being vetted by the Attorney General’s Ministry. Prime Minister John Briceño noted that deliberations are ongoing and no final decision has been made.
Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca stressed that the matter will only advance to Cabinet if the Prime Minister deems it necessary. He added that the U.S. has not pressured Belize and that the process so far has been respectful.
If approved, the agreement would allow the U.S. to reroute asylum seekers at its border to Belize, where their claims would be processed. The move has already drawn sharp interest from human rights groups and political analysts, many of whom question Belize’s ability to manage a possible influx.
Concerns center on the strain such a policy could place on healthcare, education, and housing. Belize already hosts refugees and asylum seekers from neighboring Central American countries, adding complexity to the discussion.
For now, the government says consultations will continue before any step is taken.
