By Zoila Palma: The Forest Department, under the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Solid Waste Management, has secured a conviction in a wildlife case
On October 15, Jordan David Woods was found guilty in Stann Creek District Court for unlawful possession of two jaguar teeth, violating Section 19 of the Forest Act.
Woods was fined $5,000 plus $5 in court costs; failure to pay by October 15, 2026, will result in six months’ imprisonment.
Jaguars are a protected species in Belize, and possession of any part of their body is strictly prohibited.
The Forest Department thanked the Belize Police Department, the DPP’s Office, and officers including Corporal Keyren Williams and Mr. George L. Gomez for their work on the case.
The department reminded the public that wildlife crimes carry serious penalties and urged citizens to report illegal activities via the Wildlife Hotline at 610-1524 to help protect Belize’s biodiversity.
