Belize Forest Department hosts first Mangrove Selective Trimming Training

By Zoila Palma: The Forest Department recently hosted its first Mangrove Selective Trimming Training aligned with the Belize Forest (Protection of Mangroves) Regulations, 2018.

The training is to support implementation of Green Development Techniques.

A myriad of representatives of the private sector, academia, utility companies and members of the Belize Mangrove Alliance, received hands-on experience on how to selectively trim mangroves once obtaining the appropriate permits from the Belize Forest Department, and how development can be intertwined with proper mangrove management, ensuring minimal removal of mangroves.

The Forest Department notes that selective trimming of mangroves (less than 25% of a tree) ensures its survival and continuation of ecosystem services provision, even within development projects.

“ALL Mangrove Selective Trimming or Mangrove Alteration requires a permit from the Belize Forest Department.

This socialization initiative is funded through the Government Strategic Allocation Project under the Blue Bond and Finance Permanence Unit, in partnership with the Belize Fund for a Sustainable Future,” the Forest Department said.
