By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A vessel sailing under the Belize flag came close to a major maritime disaster off India after engine failure and flooding left it dangerously tilted at sea.
MT Seagull 9 was carrying 23 crew members and 9,000 metric tonnes of palm oil when the emergency developed near Paradip.
According to Indian authorities, the tanker suffered a main engine failure before ballast tank flooding caused the vessel to list.
The ship sent out an urgent distress call and the Indian Coast Guard quickly dispatched rescue assets.
A specialist team boarded the tanker and began emergency de-flooding operations.
Damaged seawater pipelines were secured, while pumps were used to remove water from the vessel.
The Indian Coast Guard says the combined operation stabilized the ship and prevented it from capsizing.
Pollution-response teams were also activated after a minor palm oil sheen was spotted near the vessel.
Follow-up aerial surveillance later confirmed that the sheen had dissipated.
MT Seagull 9 was eventually taken under tow by a Paradip Port Authority tug.
Technical crews remain involved in repairs to the vessel’s main engine.
The Belize-flagged vessel remains under close monitoring while the operation continues.
