Belize fall to Venezuela 87-80 in overtime in FIBA U18 AmeriCup Classification 5-8 game, to play for 7th place on Sunday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a heart stopping overtime, Venezuela controlled the pace and won the Classification 5-8 game 87-80 over Belize in the FIBA U18 AmeriCup at the Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Saturday. (To see the game, click here).

Belize appeared headed for their second win in the hemispheric tournament, leading all the way until the last few minutes of regulation time. However, Venezuela made a late run and our boys couldn’t stave off the South American onslaught which led to a regulation 68-68 tie forcing the five-minute extension.

Belize will now settle for the seventh place game against Puerto Rico at 9:40 am on Sunday while Venezuela will play Brazil for fifth place at 12:10 pm.

Again forward Josiah Moseley led Belize with 31 points, five rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Elijah Favela added 20 points. Douglas Langford scored 13 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, made three assists and two steals.

Tevaughan Dawson and Jason Orosco scored seven points apiece. Ian Parham who scored 17 points against the Dominican Republic went blank in points, got two rebounds, and made six assists and two steals.

Jeiminson Márquez was Venezuela’s pointman with 32 points, nine rebounds, and two steals. He was complemented by Ydderick González who scored 16, grabbed seven boards and made five assists.

Anthony Reyes scored 16 points off the bench, and added six rebounds and six assists. Jesús Centeno added ten points and 15 rebounds.

In the first game on Saturday morning, Brazil defeated Puerto Rico 69-55 in the first Classification 5-8 game. Belize are facing Venezuela at 12:10 pm in the second Classification 5-8 game.

Later on Saturday, Canada take on the United States at 2:40 pm in the first semifinal and Argentina close the day against the Dominican Republic at 5:10 pm in the second semifinal.

The final Classification 5-8 games, the Third Place game, and the Final will be played on Sunday.
