By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Under-17 Women’s National Team will be facing archrivals Guatemala at 1:30 pm on Wednesday in their second game at the first-ever Central American U17 Women’s Championship, being held at Nicaragua’s Institute of Sports Volleyball Gymnasium (IND) in Managua. The regional tournament is organized by the Association of Central American Volleyball Federations (AFECAVOL).
Belize lost 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-23) in the opener to Costa Rica on Tuesday. After an unsteady start, the U17 Belize Women’s National Team improved their performance as the match progressed, putting up a good fight against the Costa Ricans in the third set.
“José Fontes, Head Coach of Belize, said that the main goal is growth, and he believes the team achieved that in the match,” the Belize Volleyball Association said after Tuesday’s inaugural game.
“The team’s performance noticeably improved between the first and third sets. They had some challenges with defense, but he was especially proud of the third-set performance because they were up against Costa Rica, which is a great team.”
The Belize Volleyball Association conceded that Costa Rica was stronger at the net with solid blocks and attacks. In effect, Costa Rica’s attacks produced 37 points to Belize’s 28. The Costa Ricans blanked Belize in blocks, normally a forte for our teams, 4-0. However, both teams were level in service aces with six each. Belize also conceded 28 points to unforced errors while only gaining 19 from Costa Rica’s errors.
Belize’s lead scorer was Akili Jones, who totaled 12 points.
Wednesday’s match against Guatemala is crucial to Belize’s aspirations of medalling in the tournament. The match isn’t going to be easy, however, as the Guatemalans are coming off a 3-0 win over Honduras, whom they defeated 25-22, 25-20, 25-21.
In the other Tuesday match, hosts Nicaragua downed El Salvador 3-0 (25-12, 25-09, 25-19).
After Belize’s 1:30 pm opening match against Guatemala on Wednesday, Costa Rica will take on El Salvador in the second game at 4:00 pm, while Nicaragua will close against Honduras at 6:30 pm.
AFECAVOL said all matches will be broadcast live on NicaSports en YouTube.
