By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) aim to take down French Guiana on Tuesday night when they meet in the second leg of the Concacaf Nations League Play-In Round in Paramaribo, Suriname.
The match kicks off on November 19, at 8:00 pm (5:00 pm Belize) at the Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadium in Paramaribo.
Belize go in with the upper hand after defeating French Guiana 2-1 in the high-tempo first leg at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan last Thursday.
Carlos Bernárdez converted Belize’s go-ahead goal in the 67th minute from the penalty kick after Krisean Lopez was nipped in the box. The BMNT doubled just eight minutes later when Eugene Martinez headed a Jordy Polanco assist past goalkeeper Jean-Beaunel Petit-Homme.
French Guiana scored a very important consolation goal deep into stoppage time when Thomas Torvic hammered in a header in the 90’+3 minute, keeping their hopes alive for the return leg.
So far, Belize have a five-game winning streak since coach Charlie Slusher took over the reins of the BMNT. Here’s hoping they gain another victory on Tuesday and qualify to the Concacaf Gold Cup Prelims which will give them a shot at the region’s highest competition.
Belize have only competed in the Concacaf Gold Cup once, back in 2013.
