By Zoila Palma:  Belize joined 10 other diplomatic allies in voicing support for Taiwan during the 79th World Health Assembly held this week.

Minister of Health and Wellness, Kevin Bernard’s statement reiterated Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the United Nations system and its specialized agencies.

Bernard stated that United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 does not prevent Taiwan from participating in international organizations and said Taiwan’s expertise would benefit the global community.

The World Health Assembly officially opened on Monday, and by Tuesday, ten of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies had already spoken in support of its participation.

Those countries included the Marshall Islands, Guatemala, Palau, Haiti, Paraguay, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Eswatini, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Tuvalu.

Following Belize’s statement, all 11 World Health Organization member states that maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan had publicly expressed support for the island nation during this year’s assembly.

In addition to delivering statements, all 11 allies jointly submitted a formal proposal to the World Health Organization Secretariat before the opening of the assembly.

The proposal called for Taiwan to be invited to participate in the World Health Assembly as an observer and requested that the matter be included as a supplementary item on the assembly’s agenda.
