By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize actively participated in regional labour discussions during high-level meetings held from April 6-8, 2025, in Georgetown, Guyana. Hosted by the Government of Guyana in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the CARICOM Secretariat, the sessions focused on labour challenges and strengthening regional cooperation, the Government of Belize Press Office said in a statement on Thursday, April 10.

“The meeting provided a platform to assess progress in promoting decent work and aligning labour policies in the response to evolving economic and environmental conditions,” the GOB Press Office said.

On April 6, officials met to finalize key ministerial documents. The following day, Caribbean Ministers of Labour, including Belize’s delegation led by Minister of Labour Florencio Marin Jr, gathered to tackle labour market concerns. The representatives discussed ways to address the labour market challenges and strengthen regional policies.

Discussions continued on April 8 during the Thirty-Fourth Special Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) – Labour. Gilbert F. Houngbo, ILO Director General, engaged with leaders on restructuring ILO governance and preparations for the upcoming International Labour Conference.

Belize reaffirmed its commitment to social protection and the Decent Work Country Programme while advocating for continued ILO support in addressing labour challenges.

Belize’s delegation, including Chief Executive Officer Valentino Shal and Labour Commissioner Rissela Dominguez-Patt, used the meetings to emphasize the nation’s commitment to advancing labour policies and fostering inclusive economic strategies.
