By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a high-intensity Belize Elite Basketball League (BBPL) matchup on Thursday night, the San Pedro Tiger Sharks cruised past the Punta Gorda Panthers 76–61 at the Belize City Civic Center. With the win, the Sharks advanced to an impeccable 9–0 record, while the Panthers slipped to 2–6, continuing their rollercoaster season.
Arana leads the charge
Tiger Sharks guard Francis Arana put in a show, pouring in 25 points, grabbing six rebounds, and dishing out five assists. Arana was electric from the field, shooting 50%, including 3 of 8 from beyond the arc. He kept San Pedro’s offense humming from start to finish.
Panthers’ lone bright spot
Despite the defeat, Marquise Cunningham turned in an inspired performance for Punta Gorda with 18 points and 16 rebounds, asserting his presence on both ends. However, the Panthers struggled to find consistent scoring, shooting just 27.5% from the field and committing 21 turnovers, stalling any momentum they tried to build.
Daly and Wright deliver
Supporting Arana’s scoring barrage, Devin Daly chipped in 14 points, while big man Jihad Wright dominated the boards with 13 rebounds and added 17 points of his own. Daly was particularly effective from the free-throw line, going a perfect 7-for-7.
Defensive clamps and team depth
The Sharks’ defensive versatility was evident, racking up 11 assists, 15 steals, and limiting the Panthers’ key shooters to low-percentage looks. Bench contributions from Tyrell Griffith, Keith Pollard, and Keon Rowland added crucial depth during critical stretches.
Looking ahead
The Tiger Sharks remain the team to beat heading into the final stretch of the regular season. With championship aspirations, their balanced play and defensive identity continue to separate them from the pack. Meanwhile, the Panthers will need to regroup fast if they hope to claw their way into playoff contention.
