By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize City Defenders have agreed to replay Game Three of the Belize Elite Basketball League (BEBL) Best of Five Final Series against the Benny’s Belize Hurricanes but are dubbing it ‘Game 3.1’.
“BEBL exchange rate, win 4, get 3!” The Belize City Defenders said in a social media post promoting the game while alluding to the BEBL’s Appeals Tribunal ruling that Game Three, which the Defenders won 87-86, should be replayed on Friday, August 2, at the Belize City Civic Center. They are indeed saying that to claim the championship, which requires winning three out of five games, the Defenders would (counting the nullified Game Three) have to win four games.
The BEBL’s Appeals Tribunal ruled that Game Three, played on Friday, June 28, should be replayed due to a controversial finish. The decision came after the Defenders protested the BEBL Protest Committee’s decision to replay only the final 36 seconds.
Initially, the Hurricanes protested after two points were deducted from their score and additional time was added to the clock with possession awarded to the Defenders.
When the Appeals Tribunal first ruled on replaying the game, the Defenders expressed disagreement and said they would launch a further appeal. But in the end, they conceded and decided to comply with the Appeals Tribunal’s decision.
Game Four is scheduled for Sunday, August 4.
The teams had to wait until now to play ‘Game 3.1’ as the Belize City Civic Center was unavailable due to the XX Under-21 Central American Volleyball Championship.
As of now, the Final Series is tied 1-1 after the Hurricanes took Game One 87-63 and the Defenders won Game Two.
