Belize Electricity Limited welcomes back power line crew from hurricane-ravaged Jamaica for Christmas

By Aaron Humes: A team of Belize Electricity Limited power line workers has returned from Jamaica just in time for Christmas, after working on power restoration efforts following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.

The team was sent out on November 12, days after Category 5 Melissa steamed through central and western Jamaica with hurricane-force winds of 185 miles per hour, causing damage costing up to US$10 billion, the most in Jamaican history. It surpassed the infamous Hurricane Gilbert of 1988 as the strongest storm to hit Jamaica and is currently the strongest anywhere in the world in 2025.

The team of Tyrone Reynolds, Line Supervisor, and Power Line Technicians Kareem Lopez, Perr Tillett, Ethan Alvarado, Bladimir Alvarez, Adolfo Oliva, and Kendale August joined power line crews from other member countries of the Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC) to assist in restoring service lines in Jamaica.

BEL paid tribute on social media, saying, “We extend our heartfelt thanks to these dedicated employees for their service and selfless sacrifice. THANK YOU.”
