Belize Electricity Limited urges customers to implement energy conservation measures

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is urging customers to implement energy conservation measures to avoid exceeding the capacity of available power supply sources.

“As part of our plan to bolster system capacity and reliability, our Generation Team along with a team of engineers and technicians from General Electric (USA), have been working to upgrade the capacity of the Gas Turbine at BEL’s West Lake facility (Mile 8 George Price Highway) to 30 MW from its current maximum output of 19 MW,” BEL said.

BEL says that this will benefit customers with:

• 11 MW increase in overall generation capacity
• 11.5% additional backup in-country generation capacity
• Improved reliability of power supply to the grid
• Enhanced flexibility to utilize cheaper alternative fuel sources

During these upgrades, the Westlake Gas Turbine has been unavailable, and as a result, total in-country generation capacity was reduced to 85 MW, supported by 55 MW from CFE, Mexico, for a total available generation capacity of 140 MW.

“We are asking our Customers to assist us by implementing energy conservation measures, where possible, to avoid exceeding the capacity of the available power supply sources, especially during the peak demand hours and hot and humid weather conditions,” BEL requested.

The company further thanked customers for their understanding and cooperation as it continues to make every effort to maintain stable and reliable electricity supply to all service areas throughout Belize.
