By Aaron Humes: Parts of the country are experiencing further outages tonight after a major outage on the Mexican Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) system took down the entire Yucatan Peninsula this afternoon.
Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) in a statement said this was the proximate cause of the outage in Belize starting at 1:52 p.m. that hit all areas except for Belmopan, parts of San Ignacio, Ladyville and parts of the rural Belize District.
While power has been restored, the available in-country capacity is temporarily insufficient to meet power demands.
Accordingly, BEL will cut power as of 5 p.m. to the following areas: northern Belize City between St Thomas Street and Princess Margaret Drive as well as University Drive, Captain Eiley Street and Mercy Lane; parts of the Philip Goldson Highway from Courtenay Estate to Maskall including Ladyville, Lord’s Bank and surrounding communities, Sandhill, Gardenia, Biscayne, Rhaburn Ridge, Crooked Tree, St Ann’s, Maskall and Bomba.
In the Cayo District, central Belmopan including the market area and Central Site, Site 7 and Mountain View will be without power, as will all villages from La Democracia to Blackman Eddy and south to Armenia, including Maya Mopan, Las Flores, Riviera and J and W area.
Downtown San Ignacio and outlying areas of the town as well as new Santa Elena, and Benque Viejo Town and its surroundings will be affected, as will all of Dangriga, Sarawee and Long Bank.
