By Aaron Humes: In a move expected to alleviate concerns about load-shedding on the national grid, power provider Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has announced within the last hour that its 30-megawatt gas turbine at West Lake has been fully commissioned.
This increases capacity to 125 megawatts of in-country generation.
BEL lists the benefits of this upgrade for customers as follows: an increase in overall generation capacity; improved reliability of power supply to the grid; and enhanced flexibility to utilize cheaper alternative fuel sources.
Most importantly, it is projected that power will not be cut except in emergency cases if Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) is unable to provide power at peak times.
BEL is pursuing a separate installation of a gas turbine on Ambergris Caye and is setting about finding other alternative sources, particularly renewable energy such as solar power, to power the national grid.
