By Aaron Humes: A 50-megawatt solar plant will be built in Buena Vista, Corozal District, by agreement between Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) and Blair Athol Power Company Limited (BAPCOL) signed today.
BEL’s Jose Moreno, General Manager for Energy Markets, Transmission and Interconnection, cited that while solar has been in Belize for a while, it has never been engineered on this scale.
Official groundbreaking is expected by December and conclusion of construction by the end of 2026. It is a major investment that will help BEL avoid issues with a vulnerable national grid susceptible to shocks such as loss of power from Mexico, droughts and accidents. It also takes advantage of one asset Belize has in abundance – sunny days, especially in the North.
The Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is for 15 years.
Prime Minister John Briceño admitted it has been “way too long”, but it means new local renewable energy at a time that Belize has never needed it more, with energy expectations at least two years ahead of schedule, while behind at least 15 years on power generation – meaning, as happened last year, high heat and high use of energy meant Belize suffered targeted power outages despite his own efforts to maintain stability with outgoing Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
Briceño said “energy security is akin to national security” and therefore a priority for his government. But the planned USS Saudi-backed solar plant, battery storage plan and others remain a work in progress and so he commended principal of BAPCOL Sir Michael Bowen for taking the lead on this issue.
