Belize Electricity Limited and Blair Athol Power Company Limited sign historic power purchase agreement to deliver Belize’s 1st utility-scale solar plant in 2026

By Zoila Palma: Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) and Blair Athol Power Company Limited (BAPCOL) announced the signing of a landmark Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the development of a 15 MW utility-scale solar plant with a 1.5 MW / 3 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

The solar plant will be located in Buena Vista Village, Corozal.

 “What we learn here will set the foundation for future projects, including solar, wind, hybrid systems, and other emerging technologies.” – Mr. Jose Moreno, BEL General Manager, Energy Markets, Transmission & Interconnection.

BEL and BAPCOL will collaborate closely to develop and commission the plant with a target to achieve a Commercial Operations Date within 12-18 months from the start of construction. Once operational, the solar plant will supply clean, renewable energy directly to the National Grid, strengthening our energy security.

The integrated battery system will help stabilise fluctuations inherent in solar photovoltaic generation, ensuring a steadier power supply.

In his remarks, BEL’s Chairman E. Andrew Marshalleck said, “Today’s signing marks the furthest we’ve come in realizing our ambitions to harness the power of the sun. This Power Purchase Agreement sets a model where everyone – BEL, BAPCOL, and Customers – win, and that is how it should be. We have every confidence in BAPCOL’s ability to deliver, and BEL stands ready to offer its full support to bring this project to fruition.”

This initiative supports BEL’s Least Cost Expansion Plan (LCEP) 2023-2042 and advances Belize’s National Development Goal of achieving 75% renewable energy generation by 2030.

“This marks a pivotal moment for Belize as we move toward a more sustainable and resilient energy future. The project reinforces our shared commitment to providing Customers with cleaner, more reliable, and more affordable power,” a statement from BEL noted.
