By Zoila Palma: Belize’s economy grew by 1.4 percent during the second quarter of 2026, with the country producing an estimated $1.388 billion in goods and services between April and June, according to preliminary figures from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).
This represents an increase of $18.9 million compared to the $1.369 billion recorded during the same quarter of 2025.
The growth was driven primarily by the tertiary sector, which expanded by 3.4 percent to $885.3 million.
Wholesale and retail trade was the main contributor, growing by 5.5 percent to $196.7 million. Public administration also increased by 5.9 percent, reaching $104.1 million, while accommodation and food services recorded more modest growth of 1.1 percent.
The positive performance in the services sector offset contractions in the primary and secondary sectors.
Primary sector production fell by 6.1 percent to $116.7 million, while the secondary sector contracted by 6.4 percent to $200 million.
Taxes on products, however, increased by 6.4 percent, from $175.1 million in the second quarter of 2025 to $186.3 million this year.
The SIB data shows that Belize’s economic growth during the quarter was largely supported by services, even as several goods-producing industries recorded declines.
