The highlight came in girls volleyball, where Saint Catherine Academy (SCA) delivered a flawless campaign to claim Belize’s only gold medal. SCA went undefeated across four matches, culminating in a dramatic 2–0 final victory over Costa Rica’s Liceo Experimental Bilingüe de Turrialba at the Gimnasio Nacional Eddy Cortés in La Sabana, San José, on Tuesday, October 7. The tightly contested sets (28–26, 26–24) showcased the team’s resilience and tactical brilliance.
Leading the charge was team captain Jamielee Espejo, whose leadership and clutch performances earned her the Most Valuable Player award of the tournament. Espejo’s poise under pressure and strategic play were instrumental in SCA’s historic run, marking a proud moment for Belizean youth volleyball.

In the Boys Volleyball Championship, St John’s College (SJC) represented Belize and finished fifth. Though outside the medal standings, the team showed promise and determination against larger regional contingents.
Belize’s athletics delegation consisted of just 10 athletes—7 girls and 3 boys—and all three boys medalled:
Jayden Gentle won silver in the long jump with a leap of 1.70 meters on Monday, October 6. He was edged out by Costa Rica’s Yazdani Contreras (1.76 m), while Ian Muñoz (1.64 m) took bronze. Brayden Jacobs earned bronze in the 150m sprint, clocking 17.53 seconds. Nicaragua’s Eric Morales won gold (17.31), and Costa Rica’s Leo Meléndez took silver (17.41). Jan Philippe Sosa secured bronze in the javelin 500g with a throw of 40.41 meters on Tuesday, October 7. Panama’s Angel Martínez won gold (45.97 m), and Costa Rica’s Ranses Bañez took bronze (41.68 m).

Belize’s total delegation comprised 55 people, including athletes, coaches, and officials. With just 34 athletes competing—two volleyball teams and 10 track and field competitors—Belize’s four medals reflect a high level of efficiency and impact, especially considering the limited scope of participation.
Country Gold Silver Bronze Total
Costa Rica 62 47 49 158
Panamá 59 30 36 125
Guatemala 26 34 30 90
El Salvador 16 22 47 85
Nicaragua 17 33 34 84
Honduras 10 20 32 62
Belize 1 2 1 4
The IX Juegos Deportivos Estudiantiles Centroamericanos were held under the regional coordination of CONCADE (Consejo del Istmo Centroamericano del Deporte y la Educación), with official results and medal records published by Costa Rica’s national sports institute, ICODER (Instituto Costarricense del Deporte y la Recreación).
While Belize’s medal count may pale in comparison to regional giants, the quality of its victories—especially SCA’s volleyball gold and Espejo’s MVP honor—reflects the heart, discipline, and promise of its young athletes. Their performances brought pride to the nation and laid a foundation for future regional success.
