By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As it is doing in all the football districts, the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) High Performance Center Training Program tryouts are being held in Belize City under the Belize District Football Association.

Over 40 girls turned out to the Girls tryouts on Tuesday according to the FFB’s Kursha Pollard and a greater number of boys is expected for the Boys tryouts on Thursday, February 8.

‘It was a lovely outcome,” the BDFA said of the girls tryouts.

“Let’s continue to make youth development our priority.’

The High Performance Center open tryouts for boys is open to Under 14 and Under 16 boys at the MCC Grounds. The U14 tryouts for boys born in 2010 and 2011 start at 4:00 pm and the U16 tryouts for boys born in 2008 and 2009 kick off at 5:00 pm.

Pollard said the BDFA is tasked with identifying 25 girls and boys for each category. These 100 players will be trained in their respective levels in the High Performance Training program by elite coaches Shanell Gentle and Shefiu Olaganju and twice a week for a period of one year. Similar programs are being held in seven other regions countrywide.

“The turnout on Tuesday for the U14 Category had from 40 to 50 girls,” Pollard said.

“For the U16, we didn’t have a good turnout being that there is a high school competition, we’ll host one specifically for U16 girls.”

Pollard said the boys tryouts had initially been planned for Wednesday, but because of the Central Secondary Schools Sports Association (CSSSA) Football Competition Boys Finals, the tryouts were changed to Thursday.

The BDFA is also organizing Under 15 and Under 17 boys and girls tournaments for children born in 2007 or after. The BDFA is inviting teams to register by February 21.

Team representatives may contact Kursha Pollard at 613-8474 or Daniel Smith at 631-9224.
