By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A delegation of 15 vegetable producers and six technicians is heading to Poptun, Peten, to visit white potato farms.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise noted that the white potatoes grown in Peten are primarily used for industrial purposes, particularly in the production of potato chips.
Local producers sell their harvest to Frito Lay, which processes the potatoes into chips.
The Ministry of Agriculture, along with the farmers, believes that the potato variety grown in Peten could be successfully cultivated in Belize, as both regions share similar altitudes.
The delegation, led by Minister José Mai and Senior Technical Advisor Hugh Obrien, aims to explore the potential for growing this variety of potatoes in Belize.
