By Aaron Humes: A police report names the deceased soldier killed on Sunday night at the Belize Defence Force observation post in Crique Sarco, Toledo District, as Private Clive Baizar, with another injured and in recovery at the Western Regional Hospital, Belmopan.
Police recovered Baizar’s body from the veranda of a beige cement structure measuring about 24 feet by 30 feet inside the post. The body showed an apparent gunshot wound to the back of his head as well as apparent gunshot wounds to his left shoulder, right shoulder, and right cheek. The accused shooter, Private Alfredo Robinson, has been detained.
Commissioner of Police Chester Williams indicated that around 8:30 p.m. on January 19, “the two soldiers were socializing at the BDF outpost in that area when they had an argument between themselves which resulted in Robinson firing a series of gunshots, fatally hitting Baizar and another soldier also being hit.”
As to specific motive, police are still uncovering that, but the Commissioner said these types of incidents are more difficult to stop than gang-related violence and says it comes down to managing interpersonal conflicts: “I don’t think you all expect that we would be able to stop these types of killings; they are certainly outside the preventative reach of the Police. We just need to advise people to try as best as they can to resolve issues utilizing other means, as opposed to utilising fatal injuries, by way of gunshot or otherwise.”
Williams continued that Police cannot go so far as to, for example, intervene in a private yard to get between those heated after socializing.
