Belize Defence Force characterizes insufficient rations reports as part “mischief,” part miscommunication

By Aaron Humes: The Belize Defence Force (BDF) has responded to claims of providing insufficient rations to its soldiers in the field.

Chief of Staff to the Force, Colonel Ricardo Leal, in a statement indicated that the leaked photographs seen on social media were intentionally released by a soldier who failed to go up his chain of command to verify the rations allocation to the patrol based in Orange Walk, which should be sufficient to feed 13 men over 14 days.

Additionally there was miscommunication between the patrol commander and support staff as the commander did not disclose that additional rations had been set aside on site and did not initially declare all rations received.

While investigations continue, the Force reiterates that following the recent study by firm Integral Clinical Nutrition which urgently recommended changes to the soldiers’ menu to ensure better health and less exposure to illnesses, the Force works to provide adequate and nutritious rations to troops.
