By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Funeral services for the former elite Belizean cyclist Mateo Juan de Dios Cruz will be held at the Wesley Methodist Church on Albert Street in Belize City on Saturday July 20, 2024.
Mateo’s body will be received at 9:00 am for the Thanksgiving Service at 10:00 am. Mateo will be laid to rest at Eternal Garden Memorial Cemetery on Mile 13, George Price Highway.
Fifty-one year old Mateo, as he was known to all, passed away last Monday, July 15, after recently being diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and kidney failure.
His family said he was initially attended to at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital but on Monday, July 8, was transferred to Belize Healthcare Partners in Belize City where he was receiving the dialysis treatment. His family had made calls for blood donations.
They had also started a GoFundMe account with the intent of raising US$35,000 to assist with his medical expenses. They also held a barbeque fundraiser on the Saturday prior to his death.
Mateo was a charismatic cyclist and physical trainer as well. A long-standing member of the Santino’s Cycling Team, Mateo won third place in the annual Holy Saturday Cross Country in the early 2000s.
Mateo is survived by his wife Dolores Burgess Cruz, his daughter Chloe Alexis, brothers and sisters, and three grandchildren.
Grandchildren: Alain Jr, Aleyna and Alanna Alexis.
