By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Former elite Belizean cyclist Mateo Cruz passed away on Monday evening.
Mateo had recently been diagnosed with kidney failure and had been undergoing dialysis since last week.
He was initially attended at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital but last Monday was transferred to Belize Healthcare Partners in Belize City where he was receiving the dialysis treatment. His family had made calls for blood donations.
They had also started a GoFundMe account with the intent of raising US$35,000 to assist with his medical expenses. They also held a barbeque fundraiser over the weekend.
Mateo won third place in the annual Holy Saturday Cross Country in the early 2000s.
Mateo was a very friendly and sociable person
