By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean U23 cycling standout Derrick Chavarria is stepping up to the Pro Continental level, joining a new Asia-Pacific team for the upcoming season. A double gold medalist at both the Belize National Championships and the Caribbean Championships in the U23 category, Chavarria’s rise has been swift and well-earned.
His coach Ken_gokool, noted that Derrick’s transformation over the past year was driven by a structured, data-informed training plan that sharpened his sprinting power and race focus. The consistent results and growing reputation caught the attention of international scouts, leading to this new opportunity — where he’ll be joining another rider from Ethiopia under the same coaching guidance.
This marks a significant moment for Belizean cycling. Prior to Derrick’s signing, Oscar Quiroz had joined the Miami Blazers for a season, and Kaya Cattouse spent a couple years racing with LA Sweat — both notable steps for Belize-born riders on the international stage.
The coach also expressed appreciation to the Continental team management for initiating the move and facilitating Derrick’s transition to the professional circuit.
