Belize could supply CARICOM markets with beef

By Zoila Palma:  Minister of Agriculture Rodwell Ferguson says that discussions are ongoing for a beef processing plant in Belize.

“Belize has the potential to supply the entire CARICOM and the Central American markets. And so, my biggest priority was the beef industry, because we are selling cattle on the hoof to Guatemala and Mexico. There is an agreement with Mexico that we must supply at least 10,000 head per year. That will be maintained, but as of late, our cattle herd has reached 220,000, and so if we can have a beef processing plant in Belize, then that can be accommodated and we can start to sell beef cuts,” Ferguson said.

Minister Ferguson says that many countries have expressed interest in purchasing beef from Belize.

“As Belizeans, because we have quality products and we have Caribbean Chicken, then we consume a lot of chicken, but many other countries all around the world consume beef or pork more than chicken. So, if we can supply those markets, it can be good for the Belizean industry,” Ferguson added.
