By Zoila Palma: On August 1, 2025, Belize commemorated Emancipation Day, a day for reflection on the collective struggle of Africans in Belize, highlighting their resistance and resilience.
The official ceremony at the Government House featured a historical perspective of Emancipation Day and Africans in Belize, from their splendor in the mother land of Africa to the treacherous journey across the Atlantic.
“The recant of African history does not begin with enslavement, and that version of the story must be publicized more! Kudos to the students from the Gulisi Community Primary School and Ecumenical Highschool for a superb cultural performance,” the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) noted.
NICH expressed pride in Kyraan Gabourel for his recital of his poem “Uhuru”, which won first place in the Poet Free competition.
“We also recognize the Ugundani Garifuna Dance group from Belize City for the Ibagari Ritual, a significant act to memorialize the laying of the flowers for our ancestors in the Caribbean Sea,” NICH added.
“We remember our ancestors, we pour libation, and call their names, big up Mr Kashmir Claire and the National Kriol Council, Ase,” NICH expressed.
